Commercial Solar PV – Hemel Hempstead School

Commercial Solar PV for Hemel Hempstead School

Overview

This project holds special significance for the Synergy team. As a Hemel Hempstead-based specialist operating locally for over seven years, we were proud to partner with Halison Ltd to deliver a comprehensive 73.7 kWp rooftop solar array for Hemel Hempstead School.

The objective was straightforward but impactful: bring clean, local energy to the heart of the community while significantly lowering the school’s operational costs.

The installation was strategically designed to align with the school’s energy usage profile. Since the majority of energy is consumed during the day, the system is sized to ensure that 100% of the generated electricity is used directly on-site, minimising grid export.

Beyond the financial and environmental benefits, this project also serves as a live educational tool. Students can monitor the system’s performance in real-time, effectively turning the school’s sustainability goals into an everyday learning experience.

Performance

Generating approximately 70,000 kWh of clean electricity annually, this system will reduce the school's carbon footprint by roughly 14 tonnes per year, an impact equivalent to taking 32 petrol cars off the road. Over the system's operational lifespan, it is projected to prevent more than 300 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Financially, the system provides immediate relief from volatile energy prices. By generating their own power during peak teaching hours, the school can significantly cut overheads, allowing more resources to be directed back into education rather than utility bills.

System Overview

To maximise yield across the school day, the installation utilises a split-orientation strategy spanning two distinct roof areas.

  • South-Facing Array (42.7 kWp): Positioned to capture peak midday solar intensity.

  • East–West Array (31 kWp): Designed to extend the generation window, capturing lower sunlight in the early mornings and late afternoons.

The system features a sleek, low-profile mounting design that respects the aesthetics of the school buildings while standing as a visible symbol of progress in renewable energy.
